The dos and donts of executive presence

The dos and donts of executive presenceThe dos and donts of executive presenceWhen you are in that high-stakes meeting, sales presentation, interaction, or conflict your executive presence is both emotional and physiological. Your thoughts race and your heart rate escalates. People watch you. How do you execute when the pressure is on?Confidence and self-esteem are two different things. Both are essential for executive presence. Confidence is being capable, but that isnt enough. Self-esteem is feeling worthy that you belong. We build both intentionally by challenging ourselves and regulating our emotions in the moment. That means you know the goal but focus on being your best without pre-occupation with your performance. Slow down your breathing and move your focus from anxious thoughts to following your breath. That clearing allows you to observe your behavior before emotions move you into a fight-or-flight mentality.A prime athlete trains to win. When the game is played she isnt f ocused on the score, just doing her best right now. A good goalie knows if he lets a shot go by he needs to move on to the next shot. If he gets frustrated, hes off his game and into doubt.Executive presence derives from two pivotal traitsSelf-esteem how valuable you think you are to yourself and others. Your worth.Self-efficacy your ability to execute that value. Your effectiveness.Executive presence dosDo what you believe is right in the face of controversy.Be vulnerable. Step outside what is comfortable to risk the unknown.Have the humility to admit your mistakes and learn from them.Dont need outside validation. Your internal satisfaction and self-acceptance are enough.Give away the glory because the goal was a kollektiv goal and youd have never achieved it without them.Build your self-awareness to be a third-party observer of yourself and peoples perceptions of you without feeling judged. This free book Be the New Smart Leader Workbook shows you how to have unflappable grace and certainty without all the stress.Accept compliments graciously. Thank you. Im pleased you find it useful.Notice self-doubt and act anyway as opposed to waiting for perfection. Done is better than perfect.Let go of something whose time has passed. It doesnt serve you. Do this by turning toward the discomfort and not away. Name it. Own it. And retire it or it will keep chasing you down.Executive presence dontsModify your behavior based on what other people think.Play it safe, freeze or lash out when you feel judged, hold back because it isnt fair, or not the right time and avoid risk.Deny mistakes, cover them up, blame others, or hope to remedy the problem before anyone notices.Seek attention and recognition to validate your good work.Brag about your virtues or take the credit for the work of others.Dismiss compliments offhandedly because you dont feel you deserve them or the attention makes you uncomfortable.Build your executive presence by noticing your thoughts with routines. E xecute mindful choices in real time. Mindful practices that build presence include being able to pause, paying attention to your breathing pattern for three minutes Im breathing in. Im breathing out, writing two things you are grateful for each day in a Gratitude Journal, and setting a daily intention or promise to yourself I will listen before I respond today. Your presence starts with your acceptance of yourself with all your imperfections. You are capable. You are worthy and belong. You are effective.

How to teach your team to take paid time off

How to teach your gruppe to take paid time offHow to teach your team to take paid time offWelcome toWorks a Beach.Throughout this content series, were helping our readers get the most out of their summer and spend more of their time lounging rather than catching up on emails.Today, were looking atyoumanagers. You guys are in charge of making your team gets a breather andnotburn out. But are you actually convincing them to use those vacation days? Managing a team can be tough, confusing, and you may not always feel like youre getting it right. But thats okay, thats what were here for.Weve come up with our own managers manual for getting your team to take some muchYour team is probably hesitant about requesting time off because you dont take time off. Set an example by openly speaking out vacation days, and finally getting your own PTO. This will relieve the tension, and encourage them to follow your example.List Out Tasks to be Completed Before PTOHere at CC, we call this a hot list. A hot list is made up of all tasks that must be done before an employee heads out on vacation. This will help them better complete everything by a deadline if they know that theyll be able to enjoy their time off at the end of it. Its a win-win situation.Have a Streamlined SystemIs your system for requesting days off currently out of touch? If you dont have a streamlined process and requesting time off is too much of a hassle, your team probably just doesnt want to verstndigung im strafverfahren with the inconvenience. It may be time to invest in vacation tracking software or having a designated team member deal with tracking time off. Scrambling through emails or old documents isnt fun for anyone, and if you make it easier for your team itll also be easier for yourself.Be Clear with ExpectationsYou must, and absolutely must, lay down the law and tell your team what you expect of them before taking time off or during their time off. If you need them to direct all emails to a fellow colleague, let them know. If there is an important call during their absence, let them know if theyll need to dial-in or who they need to get call notes from. Also, make it clear which tasks theyll have to handle immediately upon their return. Knowing all of this will help them plan their vacation better and have everything else go smoothly for everyone.Assign Owners to Tasks While on PTOTo follow up on the above, you need to let your team know that someone will have to pick up where anyone whos on PTO left off. If the employee who will be absent prefers a certain co-worker to handle their workload, have them let you know of that too. On the other hand, be sure to pass assignments onto someone who can actually handle it, and wont drop the ball.Plan Around Schedules One thing you need to be cautious of is having too many employees out at once. You cant have two team members from the same department gone for vacation on the same days. This will only make the remaining team members suf fer an excessive workload and its honestly just unfair. If you plan carefully around everyone elses schedules, everyone will be happy. Trust us.This article originally appeared on CreateandCultivate.com.

Dealing with Job Loss and How to Deal with Your Job Loss Emotions

Dealing with Job Loss and How to Deal with Your Job Loss EmotionsDealing with Job Loss and How to Deal with Your Job Loss EmotionsHow to Deal with Your Job Loss EmotionsSuffering the loss of a job can be an emotionally wrenching experience.Youve known for months that it has been coming, but you cling to the hope that it wont happen to you. After all, you have been with the company for many years. You have produced great results. The company cant survive without you.But the economy is suffering from one of the worst recessions in years. Your company has not been doing well. You have watched others around you lose their jobs. But you tell yourself they wont let you go. They need you. You, of course, know you are in denial. Although you havent lost your job yet, it is the first stage of having to start over of having to go through the agonizing process of finding a new job. The questions pound through your headHow long will it take? Will I have to move? Do I have enough resources to surv ive a long job search? Will I have to take a cut in pay? Will I like my new job?Suffering the loss of a job can be an emotionally wrenching experience. Regardless of the reason for the job loss, it is usually difficult to understand. Extensive research has demonstrated a consistent pattern that is exhibited in the following diagramEmotional Stages of a Job LossDENIALDISBELIEFOUTWARD ANGERINNER SELF-CRITICISMWITHDRAWALREFLECTIONACCEPTANCELets briefly take a look at each stage1. Denial. You want to believe that it wont happen to you. But too often you are fooling yourself. It is the wise person who recognizes what is coming and begins the process of seeking a new opportunity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average tenure for all workers is 4.1 years. Meanwhile, career experts agree that tenure for senior-level executives is considerably less on average. You should always position yourself for new opportunities.2. Disbelief. When the day comes and you receive your disch arge, the first reaction is to think, I cant believe it. They have made a mistake. They will call me back. But in your heart, you really know they wont call you back. This leads you into the next stage.3. Outward Anger. The anger may take many different forms. It may be directed toward your boss (How stupid can she possibly be?) or to the company, the economy or any other convenient outlet for your anger. Sometimes, unfortunately, it is directed toward family members and friends, resulting in high stress and tension for everyone. At this point, you should seek out support. Surround yourself with family and friends who understand your challenge. Perhaps seek professional counseling or guidance from your minister. There are also many community job search support groups available. Seek them out and participate. As your outward anger subsides, you start to move into the next stage.4. Inward Self-Criticism.This is the most difficult stage. You may begin to blame yourself for what happened (What did I do wrong? How did I fail? or I must not be any good). Typically, this is when your self-worth and self-confidence begin to wane. When you start to question yourself, you reach the onset of stage five.5. Withdrawal. All of a sudden you find every excuse to avoid contact with the external world. You experience periods of depression. You stop your usual social activities. Your physical activity declines. You start to gain weight. Ugh. It is at this point that your inner strength and support systems are most important. It is imperative that you move through this stage quickly. Get up. Get out. Get moving. The more active you become, the more quickly you move through stage five. You begin to think through what has happened and stage six begins to unfold.6. Reflection.Being depressed is no fun and that extra ten pounds doesnt look good either. It is time to do something about it. You begin to take stock of your life and career abilities and ask yourself, What should I do now? Where do my talents best fit? and How do I conduct my search? Now, instead of looking back, you start to look forward and move into the final stage. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and you begin to see it.7. Acceptance.Hey, its not my fault. My company fell on hard times. I am a great person with exceptional talent, so when I land my new job, my new employer is going to get one dynamic, motivated employee. Im excited. This is a great opportunity for new experiences, new friends, and a whole new positive outlook on life. You have made it. You have survived the loss of your job. You are now ready to move on to a new opportunity.By recognizing the different stages, you are able to move through them quickly, rather than languish in them for weeks. Yes, you still face the arduous task of conducting a tough job search with all its inherent frustrations. Be creative in your search. Seek out job search advice and help from friends and work colleagues. Network like crazy. Practice the Three Foot Rule whenever you get within three feet of someone, engage them in a conversation and find a way to help each other. There are tons of resources on the Web and in your community to assist you. Through persistence and hard work, you will land a great new job. When all is done, you will probably end up saying, You know, losing that job was the best thing that ever happened. It was not easy, and the job search was tough, but I couldnt be happier in my new opportunity.

Job Classification and How Employers Use It

Job Classification and How Employers Use ItJob Classification and How Employers Use ItJob classification is a system for objectively and accurately defining and evaluating the duties, responsibilities, tasks, and authority level of a job. The job classification, done correctly, is a thorough description of the job responsibilities of a position without regard to the knowledge, skills, experience, and education of the individuals currently performing the job. Job classification is most frequently, formally performed in large companies, civil service and government employment, nonprofit agencies, and colleges and universities. The approach used in these organizations is formal and structured with pay or salary grades attached to the results of the job classification. In summary, the results of a job classification create parity in job titles, consistent job levels within the organization hierarchy, and salary ranges that are determined by identified factors. unterstellung factors inclu de market pay rates for people doing similar work in similar industries in the same region of the country, pay ranges of comparable jobs within the organization, andthe level of knowledge, skill, experience, and educationneeded to perform each job. Informal forms of job classification are used even in smaller and mid-sized companies and agencies to generate a sense of fairness across equivalent employee jobs. This form of job classification can be as simple as grouping similar positions in a broadband. Broadband In a broadband pay structure, the numbers of salary grades are consolidated into fewer, but broader, pay ranges. Inbroadbanding, the spread of the pay ranges is wider, and there is less overlap with other pay ranges. Broadbanding evolved because organizations want to flatten their hierarchies and move decision-making authority closer to the point at which necessity and knowledge exist in organizations. In flattened organizations, fewer promotional opportunities exist, ho wever. So, thebroadbandingstructure allows more latitude for the employer to make pay increases and provide career growth and development without the use of promotion to provide employees with opportunities. Broadband pay structures encourage the development of broad employeeskillsbecause non-managerial jobs are appropriately valued, and skill development is rewarded. Additionally, a broadband pay structure is not as sensitive to changing market pricing conditions. As such, broadband pay structures cost less to administer and manage over time. They also provide serious non-promotional income opportunities for employees. The Hay ordnungsprinzip One popular, commercial job classification system is the Hay Classification system. The Hay job classification system assigns points to evaluate job components to determine the relative value of a particular job to other jobs. The Hay method measures three components in all jobs the knowledge required, the problem solving required, and the level of accountability. The Hay method compares the relative value of comparable jobs to maintain parity across an organization. For the purposes of larger organizations with many departments and locations, union-represented jobs, and organizations with hierarchical rigid pay or salary grades and needed internal equity, a system such as Hay is appropriate. Working with Hay job classification, an evaluator uses a job evaluation instrument or questionnaire that is filled out by the department requesting the job or evaluation. Trained to assign points appropriately, the evaluator assigns points to determine where to place a job in the job classification system. The placement of the job determines the pay or salary grade within the organizations compensation system. Additional Information Following a strictly enforced job classification system will safeguard employers against some charges of discrimination since the value of each job was determined apart from the individuals doing the job. It makes unfair treatment because of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information.

This infrastructure includes, but is notlage limited to CommunicationsWorkstationsPCsCopiers, fax machines, etc.PowerHeating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)Building maintenanceFurnitureReal estate operationsMailroom operationsCashier operations Branch operations managers also play an important liaison role with the central IT and operations organizations, assisting financial advisors and sales assistants with problems that they cannot resolve on their own. Depending on the structure of the firm, branch operations managers may or may not have either solid-line (primary) or dotted-line (secondary) reporting relationships to the central operations area of the firm. Compensation Branch operations managers are paid salary and bonus. The bonus may be tied partly to overall branch results, or it may not. Career Progression Depending on the structure of the firm, the next logical step up for a branch operations manager might be as the supervisor of operations for a larger or more prestigious office, or for a larger aggregation of offices within the firms branch office hierarchy, such as an office complex or a sales region. As a result, a willingness to relocate often is required to facilitate career advancement. Relocation also may be necessary as a result of the closure of underperfo rming offices and the opening of new offices in geographic regions with sales growth or anticipated sales growth. Lastly, since experienced branch operations personnel are in demand throughout the securities brokerage industry, many opportunities to advance by changing firms also exist. There also are chances for advancement by exiting branch operations management entirely. For example, one might have built the skill set necessary to win a promotion into a spot within the central operations or information technology organizations of the firm. Alternatively, the firsthand knowledge of workflows and processes that have been gained by an experienced branch operations manager can prove to be invaluable for financial management organizations that are involved in management reporting and transfer pricing. For example, at Merrill Lynch, when the retail product profitability group made a significant push to upgrade its methodologies in the early 1990s and expand the knowledge base of its st aff, its manager actively recruited experienced operations professionals to vastly increase the sophistication with which expenses were analyzed and allocated.

How Your Seemingly Random Interests Can Actually Benefit Your Career

How Your Seemingly Random Interests Can Actually Benefit Your Career I keep busy overseeing an insurance agency, but my interests arent confined to the skills and topics related to my industry. Over the course of my career, I have realized that all of my seemingly unrelated interests and habits from collecting antique hood ornaments to studying 18th-century explorer Captain Cook to managing a company complement one another to make me a mora powerful, well-rounded, and overall content executive. The concept that creative outlets improve work performance applies across industries and hobbies. A survey from San Francisco State University found that workers who pursued creative activities outside of work from writing novels to playing video games brought more innovative thinking and positive habits to the office. Dedication to mastering a pursuit thats seemingly unrelated to ones job can spur self-discovery that benefits career advancement. In other wor ds, pursuing personal passions makes you a stronger candidate for the professional role you want.Connections Between Work and PlayAmong my interests, I have long been fascinated with copper pots, the kind used for hundreds of years to create jellies, jams, and candies. Recently, I found in Europe the largest copper pot I had ever seen. Naturally, I had to have it.The research I did to discover the copper pot, evaluate its value, negotiate a price, and transport it was similar to the process I use for many work projects, such as studying geschftliches miteinander competitors. Id had some due diligence practice that helped me secure the pot, and the research and negotiations I undertook to complete the purchase gave me practice that translated to negotiating value at work.Every job seeker has heard that continuous learning makes you a more appealing candidate, but have you ever thought about your hobbies as learning opportunities? Regardless of whether you realize it as you pursue you r avocation, dedicating free time to a non-work passion project can mold you into a better potential hire. Here are some career benefits you may reap while practicing your pastimes 1. When I watch television, its with purpose. I turn to Discovery or the History Channel to glean new information that I can often apply to my work life as well.Of course, all work and no play can be dull, and a good Will Ferrell flick is worth a stress-relieving laugh occasionally. I purposefully choose viewing options that help me sharpen my mind, recharge my batteries, and prepare myself for my next round of work.Feel like your hobbies get in the way of your career? Rethink your perspective.
